RIP Bryan Day

Brian & Dorine are so very sad to learn of the passing of Bryan Day. He was a gentle giant in the music world. He played for us many times at The Brogue in Dinny's early days. He had a wonderful voice to go along with his great bass playing. His smile was that of one happy big kid.

He will be greatly missed by his wife Susan, children, family, friends and many musician friends.

The Lanc, Kitchener under new ownership

The Lanc has been sold and well received by The Lanc fans. The new owner is Chris Corrigan. He is a jazzer and has been to New Orleans many times. He has made marked improvements in The Lanc and realy supports the jazz. He is a owner of a BQ restaurant in Kitchener and is also turning the downstairs into a restaurant. He now calls the place The Lanc Smokehouse.

The new restaurant will be open in the new year. NOTICE;-----THE TIMES FOR THE JAZZ BANDS HAS NOW CHANGED AS OF JANUARY 1 2012 FROM 2.00PM TO 5.00PM. IT WILL NO LONGER BE 4 TO 7 PM AS IT WAS IN THE PAST.

PLEASE COME OUT AND SUPPORT THE BANDS AT THE LANC. Wayne & NANCY Pauli continue to bring great music to The Lanc and THERE IS A GREAT ASSORTMENT OF MUSIC AND SPECIAL ENTERTAINERS AND BANDS COMING IN THE FUTURE.

Once again Dinny and the All Stars took part in the Street Shuffle at the Time Horton's Southside Shuffle outside Skinner Funeral home.

There was, as always lots of great artists to see and we would just like to say a big thank you to all the fans who came and supported the event. We love seeing you and we love playing for you.

We played this gig last year and it was great. It is a great overnight event. Last year there were quite a few people from Kitchener and Buffalo Jazz Society

Over his long and distinguished jazz career Malcolm has played trumpet with:

Canal Street Jazzmen, Clyde Valley Stompers, Metro Stompers, Eddie Condon, The Hot Five Jazzmakers, Southern Comfort and many celebrities on both sides of the Atlantic.

Our sympathies are with his family and friends Malcolm will be very much missed.

Chick 'N' Deli closed, Climax Jazz Band have a new home

Chick 'n' Deli, the place, in Toronto, to hear live Jazz for over 30 years closed it's doors on the 9th April 2011 and will not be reopening. The business was once owned by Jack Brewer, (NHLer Carl Brewer's brother) until his death Aug. 22, 2007. Then it was owned by Kathleen Brewer (Jacks wife) and Steve Amuno. The Chick'N"Deli has been the home of The Climax jazz Band since 1983.

The Climax Jazz Band have now moved to Scruffy Murphys - 150 Eglinton Ave, Toronto and will be on stage Saturdays between 4 and 7pm.

ALEXANDRIA BAY RAGTIME JASSTIME FESTIVAL AT THE BONNIE CASTLE RESORT

Just wanted to remind you of this great festival that happens every year do the very hard work of Wayne & Nancy Pauli. It is so much fun and the bands and entertainers are second to none. They do this for just room and board.

It is held at The Bonnie Castle Resort on the St. Lawrence River. The sights are unbelievable. Now this is not a 4 or 5 star hotel but it is a darn good 3 star resort. The rooms are clean and comfortable, food delicious, service very good, scenery great, nice pool indoor and out door, and grounds are great. You get to see The Bolt Castle right from the diningroom windows along with the view of the river. There have been some bad reviews written in the different review columns on their website but this is not true. If you want a 4 or 5 star resorts then you need to go to the Royal York, or the Westin downtown. You know not even those expensive hotels get that kind of rating. This is a nice comfortable place for a lot of fun, music and dancing on this particular weekend. The hotel feeds you well and the waitresses are very friendly. So get thinking about this great event and pay no attention to those stupid reviews. BE SURE TO PASS THE WORD AROUND.

I would not miss going there for anything or anyone. Book early as it fills up quickly.
You need to book right through the hotel not through Wayne & Nancy. They sell you your weekend pass. Go into The Lancaster Jazz Club website and read all about this great festival.

Suncoast Jazz Festival - Clearwater, Florida

SUNCOAST JAZZ FESTIVAL CLEARWATER FLORIDA NOVEMBER 2010

The Suncoast Dixieland Jazz Classic is a fantastic event. This year was our second year and it was so good. It is hosted at The Sheraton Sand Key Hotel in Clearwater and The Marriott Hotel across the street.

There was 15 bands this past year and every one of them was outstanding. There is alway some that stick in your mind for their special performances, like Coronet Chop Suey, Dave Bennet who is a double for Benny Goodmen not only in looks but in his clarinet playing. He is really special to hear. Wally's Warehouse Waifs also a great band to hear. There are many and hard to port out all of their special features. The hotel does a great job of hosting this festival. There are many places to eat and drink and the staff is very helpful.

So if you get a chance to go to Floridia in November around the 19th or 20th be sure to attend this event. They have a great website to look up all of the information and dates. I highly recomend you attend this festival.

The Lanc, Kitchener

Dinny and the band were at The Lanc in Kitchener, Ontario in October and will be there again in December. This is a fantastic place to go. You can't go any where and hear a different band every Saturday. There is a lot of great music fun and dancing.

It is run by Wayne and Nancy Pauli. They work very very hard to keep this great place going. There is a small cover charge but it is well worth it. You can also become a member and then your cover charge is less at the door. It is every Saturday from Sept. to May. The place is well kept and has a great bar. So be sure to come up and enjoy this super music and fun every Saturday at The Lanc in Kitchener.

Ottawa - Jazz

We had 2 gigs (June 6th and August 15th) with The Magnolia Rythmn Kings leader Bob Misener. They are a lot of fun and the pub is great for the gig. There is always a good attendence including Mike Duffy of our senate. He loves the jazz.

The band is great and very friendly and have been playing there for many years. They always treat Dinny very well. Bob & Doris are a lot of fun to be with.

September - Jazz - Simcoe Jazz Society

Dinny And The Allstars opened the season in Barrie at Sticky Fingers. That is where the Simcoe Jazz Society holds their jazz once a month. They invite bands from all over Toronto and the surrounding area. It is a lot of fun and you meet many of the same people and it becomes a great house party. There is lots of dancing at this event. The members love to dance up there. Ted Fry is the president and runs this wonderful event . It runs from September to June. I highly recomend attending.

The South Side Shuffle

The South Side Shuffle is always a great event. Dinny's band is always asked to play on the street for the shuffle. It is a lot of fun as there are many other bands and the street is closed off for 4 hours while the bands play.

He looks forward to this every year and it really draws a lot of people to Port Credit. There is a lot of hard work put into this event by Chuck Jackson of The Downchilds Band and hundreds of volunteers. There are stages at the park and many big name performers such as The Downchilds Blues Band and Ronnie Hawkins. It runs from a Wednesday after Labour Day to the following Sunday. It truly is worth going to.

Mark Twain Jazz Festival, Elmira

Dinny & The All Stars were invited to play for the Mark Twain Jazz Festival in August in Elmira New York. It was a wonderful experience. There were 3 bands and the festival was hosted by Joe Cavelaro and his band.

They closed off the street by a park, had barbaques going, french fries and what ever to eat and lots of great beer. People brought their lawn chairs and sat and danced to the super bands. It was a nice warm sunny day and many people from The Lanc area and Toronto came. Dinny's band had Canadians and Americans in it. That is why it is called The All Stars. We had a wonderful host who housed Dinny & I and Wayne and Nancy. They were very generous with their hospitality. It was Lynn & Pam Eberhardt. It was a lot of fun and would love to do it again.

Private Gigs

In the summer and the fall we had 3 private gigs. One was a 47th anniversary, another a appriciation day at a yacht club and the other a 70th birthday. They were all fun events and really appreciated being asked to play for our friends and community. The event in Port Credit at the Yacht Club was Dinny's 3rd time and was asked back by special request. It felt good to think that the people enjoyed his music that much.

A very special day in Port Credit as it was their 150th anniversary.

Dinny was asked to get his band together as they were in the parade on a float. It was a lot of fun for the boys. Dinny got a real kick out of it and felt very honoured to play for their first parade in Port Credit. I believe it will be happening again this year. It was a super parade and the floats and entertainment was supurb.

We had a great time, playing with Bob Misener's Magnolia Rhythm Kings in Ottawa, at The Royal Oak. We must have partied right, as we are very tired - OK, suppose the traveling had something to do with it too.

Would we do it all again - Yes.

Haiti Fund Raiser (Jordan Klapman and band) - St Andrews Church

That same Feb. 14th only in the evening we attended a jazz concert at St Andrews Church on King St by Roy Thompson Hall.

It was a Haiti fund raiser and Jordan Klapman put together an excellent band. This band really cooked. How could it not be excellent with musicians such as Jordan Klapman, Glenn Anderson, Jack Zorwarski, Jamie Macpherson, Tom Skublics, Rob Somerville Jon Seiger and special guest vocalist Julie Michels. It was a night to remember. The church was packed and the sound in this church is excellent. These musicians really know how to put on a show.

Last Sunday February 14th Brian, Dorine Nancy and Wayne Pauli attend a Valentines Dance at Andre's restaurant in the Monte Carlo Hotel on Derry Rd. It was a lovely brunch and afternoon dance, with the music supplied by The Hot Five Jazz Makers. It was a charming afternoon and the buffet lunch was delicious. Andres and the band put a lot into it and it was well worth attending.

Jakes Boathouse ReUnion - 30 years - Thanks everyone

Just recently on Sunday January 24th Dinny arranged to have a reunion at Jake's Boathouse in Brampton, owned by Mike Cuttle for 30 years.

Mike was celebrating his 30th year in business and was bringing in some of the old entertainment he had had in the past. Dinny happened to see the advertising and went to see Mike about bringing back the band that started the Trad Jazz there. Mike gave him the opportunity and he was able to round up 5 of the originals plus 7 other musicians. They were nothing but the best who still play around town with different bands. The musicians were very helpful in getting this reunion together with Dinny. It was a pleasure to play with them. The attendance was fantastic. We had a turnout of 114 fans. This pleased all of us very much and the music was a complete blast. It will long be remembered. We were fortunate to have Ross Wooldridge as a guest.

Thank you musicians and fans for your total support and Mike Cuttle for giving us the chance to bring the old music back to Jake's.

Florida Suncoast Jazz Festival, Clearwater

☀ Suncoast Jazz Festival in Clearwater.

Well this was a blast. It was the first time for Brian & I and it was fantastic. We had been told time and again of how good this festival is. The bands were exceptional and the venue marvelous. We have heard great music in our span of traveling around, but this took the cake. There was so many excellent bands, it was hard to pin them down as to who was the best. The arrangement of the hotel, food and staff made it very enjoyable. It is great just to go for a week and have some time to yourself and them off to the festival for 3 days. It was very surprising as to how many of our jazz fans from The Lanc and Toronto go to this festival. It was like old home week.

So keep this in mind for next November, we sure are. Our plans are in the works for 2 weeks this time. It would be hard to hold us back.

Brian had a very busy summer playing at The Lakefield Jazz Festival, Collingwood Jazz Festival and a special gig in Orillia. It was a great June, July and August. He also played with Bob Misener in Ottawa in the summer and that is always a great gig.

So thank you to the bands that hired Brian, he is truly greatful for the fun experiences.

CD Update

The band Dinny and The Allstars Live at The Lanc CD has been very successful. We have sold more than 3/4 of our Cd's. This is a fantastic surprise for us. We were hoping for it to be a success, but did not think it would go over this well for our first try. We had a fantastic band full of very talented musicians which made it so great. Our technical staff did a marvelous job on the technical end of it. It was a little difficult getting started as the power went on the first try due to a bad storm. However 2 weeks later on May 9th we recorded it and all was a great success.

Thanks to the band, tech staff and our wonderful fans at The Lanc and Toronto fans who travelled up to The Lanc on the recording date.

June Hill - we miss you dearly

It is with a very heavy heart that I have just read of June Hill's passing.

She was a very dear, sweet and loving person.

She made friends with me back in 2000 at The Rex.

 I was by myself and within a few moments she made me feel

as if I always known her.  She introduced me to her

great husband Ted who has always been so sweet to me.

 I commented on the piano player and  she quickly responded and told

me it was her son Peter Hill.  You could see she was very proud of him.

At the end of the show she invited me to join them for dinner seeing

that I was by myself.  I did and also many times after that.

June and Ted always came out to support Brian's gigs and

my birthday bashes  that Brian would surprise me with.

We will miss her dearly.  She always had such a warm and

friendly smile and always made you feel so special.

Our love goes out to Ted, Peter and family.

They must be heart broken to say the least.

We love you so much June you were so special to us.

September brought The Southside Shuffle and as usual it was spectacular. Dinny's band did the opening greeting of the main ball. He followed through with the Street Shuffle and then to The Brogue. All of this is held every year in Port Credit. Many thanks to Chuck Jackson and all of the hard working volunteers and BIA staff, restaurants and pubs who supplied great entertainment.

Collingwood's First Jazz Festival

Brian (Dinny) and I attended this festival (14th August 2009) Brian was playing with The Figleaf Jazz Band. It was a fun experience and they hope this is going to be a yearly gig. There was a good assortment of music and singers at this festival. The jazz festival was held in the day time from 12.30pm to 6pm and then again from 7pm to 10pm. They did not close the street off it just goes on while people shop. Collingwood has much improved their main street and town. It was a pleasure to go there. They also have that wonderful Blue Mountain Village with many hotels, stores and restauants. There was live music and outside entertainment plus out door movies on Wednesday night. It is really a lot of fun.

So take the time to go there for a day visit or a weekend, and watch for the jazz festival to come next year.

CD Release Party - Dinny and the All Stars

Sgt Peppers Bar & Grill - Stouffville

The new Sargent Peppers, in Stouffville, Ontario, Canada is a really a nice new place. It is located on hwy 48 just 9km north of # 7 hwy, in a large plaza with a Walmart and Canadian Tire store.

The bar and grill are trying to build it's customers base and a jazz cliental up. Jazz fans from Sgt Peppers Markham location have visited the new venue (since losing their resident jazz band), and like it a lot. The atmosphere's cozy and the pub and grill menu includes the every popular burgers and wings and of course a nice cold beer.

The Ragweed Jazz band has been fortunate to land gigs at the Stouffville Sgt Peppers every second Thursday from 7.30pm to 10.30pm. Brian's (Dinny) calendar has the dates as he will be appearing with them most Thursday nights. So come and support local live jazz musicians we'd love to see you.

Next live jazz date is 30th July 2009.

Lakefield Jazz Festival

Can't believe it has been a whole year. Looking forward to seeing the other artist performing (Lakefield Jazz Festival - Line up 2009) as well as getting a chance to check out all the Arts and Crafts, which vary from jumpers, paintings to furniture.

Lakefield is one of our favorite events, it's very informal and the breeze off the river drifts the music along on hidden currents of air. The big white tents and strings of fairy lights make it welcoming in the morning, late into the evening and magical once the sun sets.

Dinny is performing with the The Ragweed Jazz Band in the afternoon so we will get to dance the night away in the pavilion.

Alexandria Bay Ragtime Jass Festival - was a blast

Once again Alexandria Bay Ragtime Jass festival was well attended and well organized. The musical styles complemented each other, the sense of fun and passion for jazz was evident and really inspiring. Bonnie Castle, beside the St Lawrence River, was the event venue. Live bands in the bar and the dining room gave us a chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery as we wandered between the stages. The great atmosphere and enthusiastic audience made the drive from Toronto all worth while. The weekend also gave us a chance to catch up with old friends and make new friends which makes this festival one of our favorites.

We even got our photo (Dinny and the All Stars, Toronto play for a crowd .....) in the local newspaper - Watertown Daily Times - article - Alex Bay host ragtime, jazz fest - photo.

Alexandria Bay Ragtime Jass Festival - here we come

Another big gig for Dinny. He has been asked to put together a band for The Alexandria Bay Ragtime Jazz Festival (New York). The festival runs from the 22nd to the 24th May 2009 so Dinny had a lot of ringing around to gather together the band members at such short notice.

Dinny has played the festival in previous years, so he had a good idea of what would be required from the band and how much fun the festival is. It is a great coming together of very talented musicians in a very beautiful location and we're really pleased to have been asked to participate.

After working hard at making it happen I'm glad to be able to say Alexandria Bay here we come.

Well it was quite an upsetting weekend. Friday (24th April 2009) the first part of the Live Jazz CD recording went great at The Brogue and I believe the recording there went well.

Saturday (25th April 2009) started off great but the big storm hit the area around The Lanc in Kitchener very bad and all the power went out after the band had played their 3rd piece. Everyone just stood there in shock and could not beieve what happened. It went out at 4.20pm and did not come back until 6.50pm. After we all composed ourselves the band got playing again to entertain the fans for the rest of the afternoon in the dark. They all stayed and applauded Dinny for picking up and starting again.

Due to time constrains the only thing to be done was to reschedule. So we are going for Take 2 and will be recording the rest of the CD on the 9th May 2009 at The Lanc from 4pm onwards.

Big thanks to all our fans for your support, staying with us in the dark and helping to keep our spirits up. Hope mother nature gives us good weather for the next recording session. Look forward to seeing you all again then.

Brian (Dinny) and Dorine Dinsdale will be featuring a round up of jazz events they have attended in and around Ontario each week. The event might be a private party, a scheduled performance of Brian's own jazz band "Dinny and The All Stars" or his guest appearances playing trumpet with other local jazz bands and musicians.
